General / Wiisis!

Shameless promotion, I know. Forgive me.

But if anyone is interested in reading up on one of the projects I've been devoted to recently, check out the new Wiisis mini-page! It's a modification for Crysis that lets you play the game with the Nintendo Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers. It has tons of cool features and gesture controls, and it's a Hell of a lot of fun to play.

There's a demonstration video of it (narrated by me, so that at least makes it worth watching) here.

Merry Christmas!

Who else has picked this one up? It's definitely one of the better Zelda games so far. The touch screen controls were odd to get use to at first, but it flows after awhile. And actually using the mic to get through puzzles is new.

Dragonade and DragonServ / Forces team switching is a bad idea
« on: September 26, 2007, 08:09:57 PM »
So here I am, minding my own business playing as Nod on City Flying. I am in my apache, just chillin' with the rest of the crew, when all of a sudden, I find myself force switched onto GDI.

And my Apache falls to the ground, prey to any who come by.

What kind of moronic nonsense is that? The ultimate neglect. If you force someone over, take care of their vehicle. Either sell it back to them, refund their purchase completely, or just simply destroy it. Having the enemy get someone's vehicle because they were force switched is just plain ridiculous.

General / Barnyard Brawl - 3D Tower Defense Free Download
« on: September 19, 2007, 10:20:53 PM »
Hey ya'll!

Barnyard Brawl is a 3D Tower Defense game. Tower Defense is a real-time strategy game where you place towers to defend a goal from hordes of creatures. In the case of Barnyard Brawl, you must defend the barn from woodland creatures who are trying to get at the stores of food stored in your barn. You have six different towers that you can use to stop the woodland creatures as they move along the path. You'll need to place them strategically around the farm as you have limited resources to construct new towers. Think you are up to the task? Visit the downloads page and try it out for yourself!

For the curious:
Creationism Museum Opening in Kentucky

For the lazy:
"A new creationism-espousing museum is opening in the state of Kentucky. According to a New York Times article the museum depicts humans and dinosaurs living together in traditional 'diorama' style exhibit. 'Whether you are willing to grant the premises of this museum almost becomes irrelevant as you are drawn into its mixture of spectacle and narrative. Its 60,000 square feet of exhibits are often stunningly designed by Patrick Marsh, who, like the entire museum staff, declares adherence to the ministry's views; he evidently also knows the lure of secular sensations, since he designed the Jaws and King Kong attractions at Universal Studios in Florida. For the skeptic the wonder is at a strange universe shaped by elaborate arguments, strong convictions and intermittent invocations of scientific principle. For the believer, it seems, this museum provides a kind of relief: Finally the world is being shown as it really is, without the distortions of secularism and natural selection. '"

And before you reply, please indulge yourself in these excellent words:

Are you kidding? This museum is doing us a tremendous favor. If anything, we should send them money.

The intelligent design movement managed to make creationism look vaguely scientific. Its proponents had academic degrees and wrote books; Behe is actually a biochemist. They didn't make patently absurd claims about world being 6000 years old, they didn't use the Bible as a primary source, and they didn't directly refer to God and Jesus in every third sentence. They didn't do science, but they did a decent job of pretending to, and made creationism look almost respectable.

But if you want to see creationism made to look ridiculously unsophisticated and ignorant again, nobody could do a better job than this museum. Apatosaurus living with Adam and Eve? Dinosaurs on Noah's Ark? If you were trying to parody creationism, or create a strawman of all the worst creationist arguments, you couldn't do a better job. And the intelligent design guys- Behe and Dembski- will suddenly find that when they're arguing for creationism, people will be asking them if they believe that Jesus rode a Velociraptor.

So I say, put the Genesis account on display, in all its glory, and let people see it. I think most people will leave thinking exactly what they thought when they came in: evangelicals will leave still knowing that every word in the Bible is true, people looking for a laugh will emerge thinking that while science doesn't have all the answers, it's a lot better than a bunch of ancient myths, and kids- well, I say, let them see dinosaurs and men living alongside each other. Because while adults like to be told what they already know, kids like to ask questions, and I think those dioramas will get them asking a lot of questions.

Honestly, I'm amazed that there are actually people out there who can state that they really believe the dinosaur and man have walked side-by-side in the past, and can manage to keep a straight face throughout.  Because, in all fairness, for a sane man to be able to do that, his face would have to literally be numb to the touch.

Has anyone else picked this game up yet?  It's pretty damn cool so far from what I've seen.  The game makes heavy use of the DS touch screen and the WiFi feature.  You can battle/trade with anyone in the world now, and the world trade has taken the form of a large classifides where you can put in requests for a trade (what you want/what you are willing to trade) or you can look for posted trades to satisfy.  The other person doesn't even have to be on the game for the trade to go through.  They can just post it and check back later on to see if anyone made the trade.

My connection ID: 4167-1101-9544-9000.  So if anyone wants to do any trading or perhaps take on my awesome team, I'm willing.  I'm about to get my third badge.  I've seen 65 so far and caught just shy of half of those including one of the fossil ones that I dug up from the underground.

General Discussion / C&C FarCry Beta - Technology Preview Now Available
« on: February 20, 2007, 01:47:27 AM »
From Dante:

After much work from the team, we have come to the conclusion that the best way to get more artists on board is to get out there with what we are doing a bit more.

Today, I am here to announce an “open beta / technology preview” that will be focused for level designers to come in and start making maps for C&C FarCry.

What is supported in the mod?

Currently we have almost all of our coding completed in 1.4 and are tracking down bugs as well as gearing up to start a huge push on getting our maps and buildings developed.

In our initial release we are providing you with all of the scripting, as well as a tutorial to start building your own C&C style maps for FarCry.  At the current time we are not yet ready to release our own maps, but as community maps are created, we will be creating official community map packs.

The current mod has the following features:

  • Pre-built building classes including the Soldier Factory, Vehicle Factory, Refinary, Power plant, Communication Center, and Base Defense System
  • Pre-defined character classes including Basic Soldiers, Close (shotgun) Infantry, Snipers, Engineers, and Heavy Assault Infantry
  • Gun Emplacements allow for balanced automatic base protection
  • Security Zones aid in team communication and base protection, offering a second option in place of gun emplacements
  • Character class-defined player spawn points allow for custom spawning rules
  • Purchase Terminal access points may be placed where you feel they fit
  • Vehicle spawn points allow for unique base layouts
  • Entity and game logic work WITH you, not AGAINST you when designing your levels
  • "Lego-Style" building construction puts emphasis on art and level design over technology
  • Simple but powerful Building system designed for customized maps - You can make your own unique buildings just for you map!
  • Building log (including health and building-specific variables) can be defined per map
  • Dynamic Purchase Menu definable by map
  • Custom character classes definable per map

Please use our forums to report any bugs, issues, and questions that you have.  Below is a link to the tutorial content, as well as the tutorial in PDF format.
Many thanks go to all of the team members who have came and passed, and especially to our current team roster.  A huge thanks goes out to vloktboky for breaking his neck getting the code going, most of this work is his, and I must say, it turned out exactly as we expected it to, showing his skill.
