Title: '08 Presidential Election
Post by: Lava on February 07, 2008, 09:02:18 PM
(In the United States, of course.)

So, Romney dropped out suspended his campaign today, which means that the Republican nomination will most likely be John McCain because Mike Huckabee just doesn't have enough support. = (

Also, Hilary Clinton has taking $5 million out of her personal account and put it into her campaign. Why does this matter? Because when she was questioned about where the money came from she responded, "From my account." This leads to me to wonder, If she has been raising so much money, why does she have to put $5 million of her own into her campaign? Likely this means that she is running out of money, so she'll probably drop out.

Based on the current status of the candidates I think the presidential election will be between: Barack Obama and John McCain.

Obama '08 imo.

What do you guys think?

<Can't Vote

Eenh, I was undecided, kinda liking John Edwards until he /faild. Il probly volunteer/intern for Obama if i can this spring/summer (Living in DC has perks sometimes)
Then Il have an in with the white house :p

To mav: Is that possible? You have to think theres no way Hillary will take VP, and I think Edwards wouldn't either...

As for the Republican side.....I disagree with them on almost everything, but if i could pick one to put in the whitehouse id say Ron Paul because itd be funny to watch the country fall apart (or he might actually fix stuff...naaaaaaah)

I'm not a big fan of Clinton myself, but...

That is some incredibly wishful thinking there. She holds the most delegates. Why would she drop out? As long as she can keep putting ANY fund into her campaign, she can hold the lead and win out in the end.

Obama counter-stated Clinton's announcement by urging his supporters to match the amount in donations.

It's still anyone's game. And it's going to remain that way until the very end.

For me personally, I like McCain. I don't agree with all of his policies, but he's not too far to the right that I distaste them all. For example: his policy on immigration, I can agree with. Being liberal, that probably makes other Conservatives hate him because I can like him, but his policy isn't that bad if you break it down. He wants to protect the borders first and foremost (right answer) but award amnesty for all the illegal immigrants in the country who have not committed any felonies (left answer). This is an example of playing nice to both sides, so people in the middle (which there are more of over anything) like him, but the extremes on either side will have mixed feelings, if not totally distaste him.

Obama is great because he's completely different from the normal government that has been going on since the Regen revolution. His inexperience is what I appeal to, because the way I see it, the normal has failed, so the abnormal is the next logical choice. I think with him he won't be polluted with the usual politics when making his decisions, and that's a good thing. But if he wins, he better fill his cabinet with some good, experienced people, because he has the potential of making equally dumb answers as well.

Some of Clinton's ideas just scare the shit out of me.

So..
Obama Vs McCain => Obama vote
Clinton Vs McCain => McCain vote

I am registered democrat.

I want the woman or the black guy to win, more interesting!

You know McCain is 71 or 72, which would make him the oldest president coming in to office, right?

Woman, Black Guy, or Really Old Guy.

But that's another thing to think about with McCain. His older age puts him in a higher risk of (God forbid) dying in office. So you have to consider who he puts for VP on his ticket. It's a dark thought, but a valid one.

Holy shit, I didn't think McCain was that old... And, did you know both of his shoulders had been broken and never healed correctly, because he was a POW in Vietnam, so now he has arthritis and can't lift his arms above his shoulder. Well, so much for waving to the people...

I consider myself a Conservative(more appropriately Libertarian) but I don't like John McCain. Hilary Clinton scares me for a couple reasons: 1) Redistributing the wealth = bad 2) Hilary's politics + Bill's influence = bad 3) She's a commie.

Stephen Harpers move to try and extend Canadians troops in Afghanistan farther than 2009 in Afghanistan could really mess him up and cause an election to be called.

I hope you didn't write that with a straight face.....Ron Paul is the ONLY person on either side who makes any sense...sure, he has some few wacky ideas, but overall, he is as solid as a rock. Youtube his speeches and debates and then get back to us....

sorry mylum your really cool but ron paul in power would kinda mean the US falling apart
hes very very right on some things, but the unrestricted free market is a terrifying thing
federal regulations might not always get it right but anyone that thinks that corporate america has any conscience without those regulations is naive...

looking over his website its bragging he never voted to regulate the internet and guns among other things, gun control is fairly important to me, and while i dunno anything specific about internet regulations...id think that some is probly a really good idea

McCain is gonna die before november anyways and he says the UFC should not take place in Amercia so he obviously has a vagina. And Hilary is just no, gamer if ur being serious i have lost hope in Americans. How much do you want to bet that she had something to do with the 2 guys saying iron my shirt at one of her rally's ffs. Obama is gonna become president and is gonna relize how he cant just withdraw from iraq(i personally dont oppose the war - take a guess at my party) or gonna do something stupid and take everyone out and fuck over the world

Mind you that in order to take off restrictions it would most likely have to go through Congress first, a democratic congress at that. So if he was able to make it a truly free market there would have to be a lot of people that support him. And if all goes really bad, impeach him.

Obama is gonna become president and is gonna relize how he cant just withdraw from iraq(i personally dont oppose the war - take a guess at my party)

Agreed. Have you noticed how Clinton and Obama aren't saying that they will pull troops out in a year. Hm, maybe it isn't possible at this point to pull the troops out quickly. If I recall, it isn't even possible to pull all the troops out in a year even if they started the day they took office. Even if we were able to their society would fall into a civil war (which I think will happen no matter what). I want them to start pulling out of Iraq soon because I'm worried that if they don't they might consider opening up the draft. The draft = bad. I, and probably most of the Americans here, are the perfect age to be drafted. And I'd be willing to guess that you don't want to be drafted.
Title: Re: '08 Presidential Election
Post by: prplhazed on February 10, 2008, 04:46:17 AM
I completely agree that immediate troop withdrawl isnt do-able or desireable.
I seriously doubt Hillary or Obama will really do anything of the sort, Edwards might have, but I really doubt Hillary or Obama will.
In terms of propping up Iraq into anything resembling a functioning society (not even shooting as high as a democracy) I have no idea what to do, but thats ok because nobody in power does either

To lava: I oppose the draft, but don't personally feel threatened. when it comes time for me to register I will have no problem establishing conscientious objector status. Also really doubt there will be a draft, if there is it will be the same as vietnam era, completely ripping apart America.
Theres polarization now, but the draft will make it inescapably real to so many young people who will suddenly take a greater interest in the affairs of state :p .

Side Note: seeing obama talk tommorow, oughta be interesting+fun

Its possible but doubtful.
However the election ideally chooses the best, not just someone a little better :p

And I saw obama today, it was fucking crazy. It was at TC williams highschool (remember the titans anyone? 5 mins from mi casa)
I had a ticket but they filled the auditorium to capacity before i could get in. So i got shuffled into the overflow room with my friends. We were really less than happy because we waited for a long time and it seemed like all that was gonna happen was we could hear him over the PA :(

Then he comes in and the place went nuts. I was three rows off the stage, so i had a perfect view. He apologized for the overflow but wanted everyone to hear him speak etc. Then he did the walk past the front row. Me and my friends hopped over the row in front of us. My friend shook his hand but my arm was too short :*(

It was pretty cool, whether or not you agree with him or would vote for him. I enjoy politics, so id be pretty excited to shake like huckabees hand and i cant stand him :/

Spending up the butthole?

He reduced the number of earmarks dramastically so that pointless funding to pointless projects wont be added to a bil lthat has nothing to do with them saving millions of dollars.

The iraq war. Not like every member of the house but 2 voted to fund the war. There was a major attack on US soil. Thousands of Shittes were being murdured by Saddam. It was our job as a worldpower to do something about it.

Although this happened a day or two ago, Hilary Clinton fired her campaign manager, or she quite. But, at any rate this seems to show that Clinton is running into trouble, especially with Obama winning the past 8-10 states.
